Brief Introduction about the Division

Labour standards division contributes to the overall function of the Department of Labour through formulating, granting legal status and supervising terms and conditions of service relating to establishment of formal jobs, job security and welfare of the employees in private sector.

Role of the Division

Implementation of 05 main acts.

Wages boards ordinance No.27 of 1941
Shop and office Employees Act No. 19 of 1954
Budgetary relief allowance of workers Act No. 36 of 2005
National minimum wages of workers Act No. 03 of 2016
Budgetary relief allowance of workers Act No. 04 of 2016

Following activities are carried out under the above mentioned acts

✔ Implementation of tripartite wages boards, giving instructions on service conditions and making clarifications

✔ Determination and legalization of wages, terms and conditions of service of the employees

✔ Expansion the coverage of Wages Boards so as to cover the workers in informal sector

✔ Having identified new fields of trades, establishment of new wages boards to cover the workers in those trades

✔ Conducting awareness programs for employers and employees on Labour laws in order to improve Labour standards

✔’Providing legal interpretations and necessary instructions

✔ Inspecting legal validity of collective agreements and carrying out other activities related to it

✔ Granting approval to implement five-day work week

✔ Granting approval for deductions from salary

✔ Activity, Granting Approval for employment on Statutory Holidays
